Everything You Need to Know About Kybella®

Do you cringe when you see a picture of your profile? You’re not alone. About two-thirds of Americans are unhappy with their profiles because of submental fullness, more commonly called a double chin.

Gaining weight or carrying a few extra pounds isn’t the only cause of submental fullness. Genetics and aging can also play a role, meaning that no matter how hard you work, you may not be able to ditch the dreaded double chin.

Now there’s good news for people hoping to eliminate stubborn submental fullness and improve the contour of their profiles: nonsurgical Kybella®

Kybella is a cosmetic injectable that destroys the fat cells under your chin, leaving you with a sleeker profile.

As part of our comprehensive cosmetic dermatology services, our team of dermatologists at Manhattan Dermatology is pleased to offer Kybella to our New York City patients in Manhattan’s Murray Hill and Midtown East neighborhoods.

Kybella is the only FDA-approved cosmetic injectable that can help you noticeably reduce the fat under your chin. If you’re tired of seeing double when you look at your chin, read on to learn what you need to know about cutting-edge Kybella.

Why do I have excess fat under my chin?

The stubborn pocket of fat under your chin that ruins your profile is one of the most difficult to lose. Even if you’re at your ideal body weight, having a double chin can make you look overweight.

While it’s true that being overweight or obese is a common cause of submental fullness, there are other reasons people develop a double chin. Having excess or loose skin, genetics, and the effects of aging and gravity can all play a role.

Even with careful diet and exercise, you may find it impossible to get your double chin to budge. Fortunately, nonsurgical Kybella can help give you the profile you’ve been dreaming of.

What is Kybella and how does it work?

Designed for use with adults, Kybella is an FDA-approved cosmetic injectable treatment that permanently destroys fat cells under the chin. The active ingredient in the injectable, deoxycholic acid, is a naturally occurring molecule that helps break down and digest dietary fat.

When we at Manhattan Dermatology inject Kybella into the fat beneath your chin, the deoxycholic acid begins to break down and destroy the extra fat cells in the submental fullness. Your body naturally removes the destroyed cells with other cellular waste.

The number of sessions you need differs based on your submental fullness and aesthetic goals, but most of our patients see the results they desire after two to six treatments.

The best part? Once the fat cells are destroyed, they don’t grow back, making your results permanent as long as you maintain a healthy weight.

How long do Kybella injections take and when will I see results?

We determine the number of injections you receive each session and their exact placement. By evaluating the amount of submental fat under your chin and your goals, we create a customized treatment plan for your unique needs.

Each session takes only about 15-20 minutes, and your sessions are scheduled about a month apart until you complete the prescribed series. Six is the maximum number of sessions prescribed, meaning in six months or less you’ll have the slimmer profile you desire.

How can I tell if Kybella is right for me?

Optimal candidates for Kybella are at a healthy weight and have stubborn fat under the chin that doesn’t respond to changes in diet and exercise. The best way to learn if Kybella is right for you is by scheduling a consultation with us.

Our team evaluates your medical history as well as trouble zones to recommend the best treatments available to meet your needs. We also answer any questions or concerns you may have to ensure you make an informed decision.

Since the risk of side effects is minimal, most adults with excess submental fullness are good candidates for Kybella. But Kybella is not a weight-loss aid. If you are overweight or obese, you may not be a good candidate for Kybella.

If you’re ready to say goodbye to the dreaded double chin, we can help. Call us or book online now. We also offer telemedicine appointments so you can meet with us from the comfort of your home.
